Johns Pass Inshore Report

The sheepshead are biting well this past week around the pass. We’re seeing great action on the pompano still. Lots of mackerel in the pass and just off the beaches. Plus, the snook are still very prevalent around the passes and starting to head onto the beaches. Finally, the red fish are showing up on the flats and the bigger reds are hanging around the bottom around the dock lights of johns pass areas at night. Trout action has been pretty steady around the flats and around the lights of Johns pass at night.

The twelve-hour night snapper trips this past weekend had a really great catch of big mangrove snapper along with some nice vermillion and lane snapper, too. We had a few big mangroves in the 6-8lb range on live pinfish that rivaled the mangroves we see brought in during our 39 or 44 hour trips.

Tampa Nearshore Report

Kingfish and mackerel bite is still off the chain recently near shore. We are seeing plenty of them while trolling or flat line fishing during most any near shore trip. The hogfish bite has been a little hit and miss lately but were still catching them well when we target them on our private fishing charters, but on our 10 hours we have been going a little further from shore into deeper waters to catch those great eating and plentiful mangrove snapper we have been seeing so much of lately.

Snook, pompano, and some sheepshead caught this past week around Johns Pass and the occasional mackerel too! Snook are starting to head back into the pass and onto the beaches as the water temps warm up and the bait schools show up more and more often. We are seeing most of the snook caught during the outgoing tide around the jetty and start of Madeira beach just north of the jetty using the flairhawk style jigs or large swim baits or live pinfish or big green backs. However, the snook should only become more and more prolific in our local areas and all the passes in the area as waters continue to warm and they gear up for their summer time beach front spawn.

Kingfish are back in town for spring break and it’s making our half day and all day party boat fishing even more exciting for passengers and crew alike. We are seeing nice 10-30lb kingfish smoking the flat lines and smashing our trolling plugs and spoons on the way out and back offshore.

The 39 hour fishing really improved this week for us at Hubbard’s Marina, we had quite the epic trip this past Tuesday with Capt Joe Drew! They only had 21 fisherman on the boat and they all nearly limited out on mangrove snapper, vermillion snapper and they had plenty of porgies and yellowtail snapper too.

John’s Pass Inshore Report

Mackerel are showing up early this year and we have TONS of white bait around the pass. The snook are in the passes and on the beaches too. This past week some big snook were caught from the north Jetty of Johns Pass by Mahlon Washington and his buddies using swim baits and flair hawks on the outgoing tide just before sunset.
